B Band go to Butlins

03-Feb-2010

On 23rd January the B Band took part in the Butlins mineworkers contest at Skegness. Despite all the snow that hit us on the 1st couple of weeks of the year the band were fully prepared under Peter Ashley to take on the 3rd section test piece "Diamonds" by Tom moss.  Members of the B Band were in good spirits traveling down on the coach and were confident that they could beat a line up that included many Yorkshire Bands and Colliery Bands.

The section commenced at 11.00am and the B Band was drawn number 6 out of 15. They produced a solid, confident and colorful performance which was strong in all 3 movements of the piece and looked to be the one to beat at that point of the contest. Tom Moss composer of the piece certainly thought so too, because he shook Peter Ashley’s hand after the performance and told him that they played his music exactly how he had intended it to be played.

Come results time at the mineworkers , it was a case of drawn 6th …………..placed 6th , which does not sound that bad out of 15 and against some decent colliery bands. But, after the great feedback from members of the audience and Composer alike, there was some disappointment with their eventual placing.

Nevertheless, the B Band and supporters had a great weekend in Skegness, and because of some understandable bad heads, the journey back seemed longer than ever!

The B Band are next in action at the North West area were they will playing Percy Fletchers "Labour & Love" , to try and book a place at the 3 rd section National finals.
